Castles
in Northumberland
The
county of Northumberland is blessed with many castles. The
bloody history of the border region is littered with conflict
between England and Scotland. The Border Reiver families
and a background of lawlessness leaves a legacy to this
day with Alnwick Castle and Bamburgh Castle
just two of the many examples of castles in Northumberland
that are modern day tourist attractions. Many castles, such
as Haughton Castle and Chipchase Castle, close to Barrasford,
remain family homes to this day. Both boast an enchanting
past and, although not open to the public, offer the visitor
to Northumberland with breathtaking views across the banks
of the river North Tyne.
